Verifiability in Agrifood

The agri-food supply chain is under immense pressure: consumers, governments, and retailers are demanding transparency regarding origin, sustainability, and climate impact. At the same time, the sector is fragmented, and a standardised data exchange is often lacking between farmers, processors, traders, and retailers. With the help of the BDI framework of agreements, these links can securely, controllably, and usefully share data without losing control of their own information.

The solution: shared insights with data from the source

BDI makes it possible to:

  • Make product-level CO₂ footprint data available to supply chain partners (such as supermarkets or exporters);
  • Directly link origin information to a batch or consignment;
  • Make certified cultivation practices (e.g. organic, PlanetProof, HortiFootprint) directly visible;
  • And all this via the ‘ask at the source’ principle.

Thanks to agreements on data ownership, authorisation, and standardisation, each party can controllably make data available to another party, depending on permission and purpose of use.

Concrete applications in agrifood

  • A retailer receives product-level insight into the climate footprint of a tomato, pear or cut flower, including certifications and inputs used.
  • A potato buyer can verify whether sustainability criteria have been applied during cultivation and storage.
  • The grower maintains control: they only share what is necessary, with the right party, at the right time.

This delivers

  • Management information based on primary (source) data;
  • Better substantiation of sustainability claims (e.g. CSRD, Flori-PEFCR, FreshProduce-PEFCR);
  • Higher trade value through reliable and verifiable supply chain information;
  • More efficient chain collaboration, because everyone works with the same data standards;
  • Control over data, even for small parties such as family businesses or cooperatives.
