Reflection on the DESA (Data Ecosystem Agro) meeting - from insight to next step

Published on June 18, 2026

On Thursday, 11 June, BDI attended the well-attended DESA meeting. It was a valuable day, during which the DESA team expertly shared insights from the recent series of workshops and also presented possible directions for follow-up.

The contribution of Laurens van Sterkenburg, Manager Implementation of Goal-Based Steering at LVVN, provided a clear insight into the policy background, opportunities, and scaling considerations of business-oriented Goal-Based Steering, fully integrated with Chain Steering. It once again became clear that this requires a system transformation in which freedom and responsibility go hand in hand, and in which public and private parties progressively move forward together.

The day also made clear that the gathering should be seen as a meaningful step towards carefully developing follow-up directions and decisions. It is highly valuable that it was agreed in this context to meet again after the summer period, to further exchange ideas and also share current insights from the Ministry of LVVN (Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Security and Nature).

From the perspective of BDI, we are pleased to be part of this collaboration and of the inspiring community of companies, government bodies, sector organisations, and knowledge institutions. With experience across various sectors and concrete federated data ecosystem collaborations, we see significant potential in the further development of DESA. This is especially relevant because a trusted and digital way of data collection and data sharing can make an important contribution to the realisation of Goal-Based Steering.
