Living labs

Digital collaboration does not emerge in theory, but in practice. That is why the BDI works with Living Labs: environments in which organizations jointly experiment, learn, and implement solutions for secure and trustworthy data sharing.

In a Living Lab, companies, governments, and technology partners collaborate on concrete challenges. For example, how organizations can exchange data more efficiently, how compliance and sustainability information can be demonstrated and verified, or how supply chain partners can work together more effectively without complex IT projects.

In recent years, several Living Labs have been funded and implemented through the Digital Infrastructure Logistics (DIL) program, focusing on port logistics, air cargo, and construction logistics. Currently, Living Labs are being developed in the fields of defense, chemicals, agrifood, pharma, and container logistics.

Practical experience provides valuable insights into interoperability, governance, compliance, and scalable collaboration between public and private parties.

Living Labs help organizations gain hands-on experience with digital collaboration more quickly, reduce risks, and jointly build future-proof ecosystems. The approach is practical, flexible, and scalable: from a single use case to complete supply chains and entire sectors.

In this way, the BDI is gradually evolving into a widely applicable framework for digital business operations, both within and beyond logistics.
