Heijmans and Millenaar & van Schaik showcase the power of data sharing with BDI: “True chain collaboration, without Excel or receipts”
Geplaatst op 18 juli 2025How can construction logistics become more sustainable, efficient and productive? Heijmans and transport company Millenaar & van Schaik found the answer in the application of the Basic Data Infrastructure (BDI). As part of a Living Lab under the Mobile Machinery and Construction Logistics programme by Topsector Logistiek, they explored how to exchange logistics emission data in a structured, secure and automated way, without relying on a central app or manual processes.

“The BDI makes our lives easier in every respect,” says Nikki Pije, construction logistics project manager at Heijmans. “This year, we launched a new vision: ‘We can do it together’. This project fits that perfectly. Together, we’re working to establish a new, accessible standard for data sharing in the logistics chain.”
From PDFs to ecosystem
Many companies still exchange data via PDFs or Excel files, which limits automation and collaboration. Thanks to BDI, Heijmans and Millenaar & van Schaik now share only the logistics data that is relevant to them, directly between their systems. It started with emission data, but the underlying dataset turned out to contain much more valuable logistics information. It’s an innovative collaboration that lays the foundation for a sector-wide solution: a federated network in which each party retains control over its own data, without the need for an extra platform or app.
Trust, standardisation and scalability
The cooperation between Heijmans and Millenaar & van Schaik is a real-world example of logistics chain optimisation. Other contractors and transport companies are invited to join. The approach is widely applicable, both within and beyond the asphalt supply chain.
“For me, the biggest sustainability gain isn’t in the truck itself, but in how we collaborate digitally,” says Marcel Vermeulen, Director of Millenaar & van Schaik. “BDI makes that possible.”
A call to the sector
Topsector Logistiek invites contractors and carriers to participate in the Mobile Machinery and Construction Logistics programme, which runs until the end of 2026. The projects fall under the national programme Clean and Emission-Free Building (SEB).
