BDI Board: building a strong foundation
Published on June 16, 2026On May 29, the provisional BDI Board met to take the next step in the development of the Basic Data Infrastructure (BDI). During an open and constructive meeting, it became clear that the contours of the board are becoming increasingly well defined. The shared ambition is to create a robust, reliable, and broadly supported foundation for data sharing in the logistics chain
From vision to organizational structure
Where previous discussions focused mainly on the direction and ambitions of the BDI, attention is now increasingly shifting toward the practical design of the board. The meeting focused on how roles, responsibilities, and decision-making processes can best be organized. In doing so, the organization is deliberately building on proven frameworks such as the BOMOS model. This helps provide structure for managing agreements, standards, and services. The board is working toward a situation in which all stakeholders have a clear understanding of responsibilities and how decisions are made.
Carefully designing management processes
A significant part of the discussion focused on the further development of management processes, including change management, quality assurance, and safeguarding coherence between the various components of the BDI. These processes will ultimately form the “heart” of the board. By designing them carefully now, a solid foundation is created on which the BDI can grow responsibly. At the same time, practical applicability remains a key consideration: processes should not only be well documented but also workable in day-to-day operations.
The power of collaboration
The BDI is, above all, a collaborative initiative. Its value is created through cooperation among the various parties within the logistics chain. During the board meeting, considerable attention was therefore given to the importance of engaging users, policymakers, and technical experts alike. The provisional board sees strengthening this involvement as a core objective. Transparency, clear communication, and the active sharing of knowledge and experiences play an important role in achieving this. Only through collaboration can the BDI develop into a resource that is widely supported and effectively used.
Moving forward with confidence
The meeting was characterized by a positive and goal-oriented atmosphere. There is a shared understanding that important steps still need to be taken, but also confidence that the development of the BDI rests on a strong foundation. With clear follow-up actions and growing collaboration among stakeholders, the provisional board looks ahead with confidence. The coming period will focus on further detailing the organization and taking the next steps toward a mature management structure.
The BDI is therefore visibly moving from concept to realization—an important development for the future of data sharing in the logistics chain.
