Exchange data internationally

The Netherlands aims to maintain and expand its leading position in logistics, including in the digital world. That's why we are directly involved in various international networks. We make agreements there about the digital sharing of data across borders and share our expertise. This ensures that the BDI is compatible internationally. And this is how we make sure that you can always exchange your data easily, quickly, and securely, no matter where you do business!

European Data Strategy

The last thing you want as a carrier or other logistics party is for your sensitive data to fall into the wrong hands. Especially now that digital working is taking off internationally in a massive way. That is why it is essential that we make good cross-border agreements on the efficient and secure sharing of data. The European Data Strategy has been formulated for this purpose within Europe. Fair, practical, and clear rules are needed for accessing and using data. You can read more about the European Data Strategy on the European Commission's website.

European Mobility Data Space

The European Data Strategy forms the starting point for the European Mobility Data Space (EMDS). This is a virtual network that will allow logistics data to flow easily and securely within Europe in a standardised manner, between all parties involved and across borders. The Dutch BDI is an important reference for this, as the EMDS must also be based on a so-called federated data-sharing system. You can find more about the EMDS on the European Commission's website.

EDIC Mobility and Logistics

The development of data spaces in Europe is financed by the Digital Europe Programme. These often concern large-scale projects that cannot be developed by an EU country alone. To simplify and speed up these types of multinational projects, the European Digital Infrastructure Consortium (EDIC) is used as an instrument. The Netherlands is actively committed to the realisation of the EDIC Mobility and Logistics. Read more about the EDIC on the European Commission's website.

eFTI

To be able to use data systems in European practice, you need legislation. That is why there is the European Freight Transport Information (eFTI) Regulation. This regulates inspections of freight data by public authorities. Companies can already share their freight information digitally. Authorities must work according to the eFTI starting from 2027. There is no obligation yet for companies.

You can read more about the eFTI on the European Commission's website.

eIDAS 2.0

eIDAS stands for 'Electronic Identification And Trust Services'. eIDAS plays an important role in logistics, as this service can be seen as the European equivalent of DigiD. eIDAS was developed by the European Union and regulates authentication (are you who you say you are?) when you want to use an online service with a European recognised login method. This can significantly reduce cargo theft, for example. The Netherlands intends to eventually include this service in the BDI architecture. Version 2.0 of eIDAS has now been developed. You can read more about eIDAS 2.0 on the website of Kenniscentrum Europa Decentraal.

DSSC

The Data Spaces Support Centre (DSSC) was established to put the European data strategy into practice. This centre helps set up common data spaces, where organisations can easily and securely share and reuse data, both within and between different sectors. The BDI is involved in the activities of the DSSC. You can find more information on the Data Spaces Support Centre website.

IDSA

The International Data Spaces Association (IDSA) is a non-profit organisation. It focuses on establishing and promoting standards for data spaces: trusted environments where you can share data while retaining full control over its use. The BDI is an active member of the IDSA (via Connekt).
